Throughout the year, various parenting programs are available at the MFRC. Some of these programs are available at little or no cost to both military and civilian community members.
Learning Begins - This program is offered in partnership with our Child & Youth Department. Learning Begins is a parent-friendly program designed as a celebration of parenthood. It provides information and strategies on the topic of early learning as it relates to a baby's brain development. This program recognizes that parents are the primary teaching and learning resources for their children. Both expecting parents and parents with children 0-2 yrs can attend this workshop.
Early Childhood S.T.E.P. - For caregivers with children from birth to 6 yrs. Topics include: understanding behaviour, developmental stages, appropriate discipline, and building self-esteem in the early years.
Middle S.T.E.P - For caregivers of children ages 6-12 years. Topics include: understanding goals of misbehaviour, effective communications, problem solving skills, offering choices, natural versus logical consequences and enhancing self-esteem.
Francophone Parenting Program - "Parent d'ado une Traversee" (Teens) "Vie de Famille, De La Discipline A L'amour" (6-12years) *These are new parenting program slated to be offered sometime this upcoming spring. This program will be conducted in a group setting. Participants will have an opportunity to both learn about and discuss such topics as discipline, establishing boundaries, parenting tools, and communication between parents and children. Please call our main reception staff to register your interest.
Divorce Care - This is a twelve-week program designed to aid participants in coming to terms with separation and divorce. The facilitators assist participants in processing and moving through the emotional stresses of divorce. Space is limited so please contact the Prevention, Support & Intervention Coordinator at ext: 4407 to register your interest.
Rainbows - Rainbows is an a highly structured 12 week program that fosters emotional healing among children grieving a loss from a life-altering crisis such as divorce or the death of a parent or sibling. This program enables children to deal with the normal feelings associated with grief and loss in a peer support environment. Space is limited to five participants (one child per family) who will meet at the centre for one hour a week. The Prevention, Support and Intervention Coordinator will facilitate the group. Comfort Zone - An 'Adult Grief Support Group.' This grief and bereavement support group for anyone dealing with loss. All community members' welcome. For more information, please call x3352.
"Healthy Sexuality - How to talk to your kids about sex"
The aim of this workshop is to assist parents in opening a dialogue with their child(ren) on the topic of sex and healthy sexuality. The workshop will also provide information on which websites and printed material are most credible on the topic of sex and sexuality as well as what community resources are currently available.
